Hair Transplant

DHI or FUE?
Choosing the right technique for you.

Choosing your transplant technique is the most important decision in the journey. Here's how the two leading techniques differ — and how to decide.

Hair transplantation isn't a single procedure — it's a spectrum of techniques matched to each case. The two most common today are DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). What's the difference, and how do you choose?

What is FUE?

FUE extracts follicles one by one from the donor area (typically the back of the head), then opens small channels in the recipient area before implanting the grafts. Its standout advantage: efficient coverage of wider areas with a relatively short recovery.

What is DHI?

DHI uses specialized Choi pens to implant follicles directly — without pre-opening channels. The result: finer control over the angle, depth, and direction of each follicle, translating into higher density and a more natural hairline.

Side-by-side

  • Density: DHI has a slight edge, especially at the front.
  • Growth direction: DHI is more precise; FUE does well with an experienced surgeon.
  • Duration: DHI is somewhat longer; FUE covers larger areas faster.
  • Recovery: Similar in most cases; differences are minor.
  • Shaving: DHI may not require shaving the recipient area — convenient in some cases.
The golden rule: there is no "always best" technique — only the one that fits your case.

When do we choose DHI?

  • When high density is needed in a specific zone (often the frontal area).
  • When a hairline requires very fine precision.
  • Beard, eyebrow, and small detailed-area transplants.

When do we choose FUE?

  • Covering a wider area (crown + frontal).
  • Advanced hair-loss cases needing a larger number of grafts.
  • When reducing procedure duration is a priority without sacrificing excellent outcomes.

In short

The best decision starts with a correct analysis of your case. At Lumiere, we dedicate the consultation to studying your density, donor area, and expectations — before recommending the right technique. We don't sell you a technique; we recommend what fits you.
